MOSCONE CENTER EXPANSION
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
The Moscone Center Expansion project was a 770,000 square foot structural steel building supported by a 4 to 5 foot
thick concrete mat slab. The foundation is three floors underground and the structural steel framework
extends through all four levels above ground. Many unique elements are incorporated into the structure's
interior and exterior to facilitate movable partitions for facility uses. A specially designed window wall is
utilized to incorporate a video sign board on the exterior of the building.
Consolidated Engineering Laboratories (CEL) is proud to have been selected as part of the Moscone Center
Expansion Design Build project team. CEL provided a staff of special inspectors that
provided the onsite engineers with daily information of construction activities and quality of the work.
CEL provided supplemental staffing to the City of San Francisco for concrete testing and inspection.
During the foundation mat pours, CEL provided inspection staff for more than 25,000 cubic yards of
concrete in the field and batch plants. The foundation elements of the structure were completely
waterproofed with CEL providing full time inspection. CEL provided all structural steel shop fabrication
inspection as well as field erection, welding inspection and fireproofing.
The structural steel fabrication was performed in five locations throughout the U.S. as well as two
facilities located in Thailand. CEL provided personnel at each fabrication location for all shifts required
on this project.
