HP PAVILION AT SAN JOSE
(AKA SAN JOSE ARENA)
SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA
Consolidated Engineering Laboratories (CEL) provided services on all aspects of this $150 million,
18,000 seat concrete and structural steel facility. The foundation is comprised of piles and the arena
structure was cast-in-place concrete beams and columns, precast concrete seat risers, space frame truss
system, with exterior walls of stainless steel panes and concrete support system. CEL was able to provide
inspectors for steel fabrication in three states and precast concrete at two plants. Our on-site team peaked at six inspectors including the resident inspector.
- Delayed cracking in critical welds developed after shop fabrication shipment. CEL's Resident Inspector identified the
problem. CEL's metallurgical staff developed revised pre-heat and post-heat scenarios and a
different procedure for welding the nodes to eliminate delayed cracking.
- Structural steel fabricator filed Chapter 11 during the course of the project. CEL staffed steel
fabrication inspection in 6 plants in 3 states.
- CEL performed specification review prior to bidding, saving the owner $300,000 in reinspection
costs.
