CALIFORNIA PALACE OF THE LEGION OF HONOR
SEISMIC RENOVATION
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

The California Palace of the Legion of Honor was a $36 million, highly complex structural renovation of an existing historical structure. CEL provided both on- and off-site inspection of structural steel. The onsite structural steel work, along with tying into the existing structure, took over six months to complete. The project involved continuous inspection of epoxy grouted dowels, extensive shotcrete application and concrete, in addition to the structural steel described above. CEL adopted a unique proof load apparatus, which allowed us to perform proofload testing of epoxy dowels without any damage being done to the terra cotta tile. Our documentation of as-built conditions helped the structural engineer implement design changes prior to them having a schedule impact. This enabled the contractor to maintain his schedule and keep the project on budget.
