As part of a $17 million seismic upgrade and retrofit, Consolidated Engineering Laboratories (CEL) provided full-time quality control of all field welding, bolting and fireproofing re-application. This 30- year old building was evaluated at a level of detail which was not part of the normal standard of care when the building was originally constructed. Old weldments were evaluated for cracking and replaced. Cover plates were attached to existing moment frames, and evaluation of existing full penetration welds was performed prior to any new welding being performed. CEL was able to mobilize on this highly compressed construction schedule and operate on a multi-shift level to accommodate the contractor's schedule. A detailed structural evaluation was performed of both full penetration and fillet welds.
